The Plight of our Planet Essay -- Energy Sustainability
The young boy looks back from the loading ramp of the giant metal alloy ship, his breath billowing clouds of steam in the bitter air made cold by the now almost completely diminished ozone. He stares in disbelief at the endless pile of automobiles parked haphazardly to and fro like a childââ¬â¢s worn jenga blocks fallen from a poorly made tower in the vehicles ownerââ¬â¢s frantic rush to get their families to the evacuation ships in time. How did it come to thisà ¬Ã ¬? The forlorn boy wonders. When did it all go wrong in mankindââ¬â¢s endless quest to be bigger, faster, and more powerful than all the rest? As the nearly city-sized ship reaches the smoky horizon bound for humanityââ¬â¢s new home named Kepler-22b, he gazes one last time at the vast oceans, blazing a filthy orange fire as far as the eye could see from the final disaster that had sealed humanityââ¬â¢s fate on earth. If only they had stopped drilling in the oceansââ¬âthe boy thinks. And as the distanc e grows and the bright fires fade, he tearfully waves goodbye to the now dying planet his race had called home for a millennia and slowly turns to go find his parents. Who is this distraught boyââ¬â¢s parents? Is it you? Or perhaps it is your childrenââ¬â¢s children that are living through this arguably inevitable reality. While the scenario presented is sensationally far-fetched, it is entirely possible. Perhaps not a mass exodus to a new found planet capable of sustaining life, and even if we were lucky enough to find such a planet it would likely not be accessible, nor needed in this generationââ¬â¢s lifetime. But the simple truth remains that earths sustainability is quickly diminishing due to a plethora of causes. Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies
The two novels, Animal Farm by George Orwell and Lord of the Flies by William Golding were both written over 50 years ago, meaning there is much to be said about both. All you have to do is type in the name of each of the novels into Google and out pops tonnes of information about each. If someone were to research enough of the two books they would be able to see that they are quite similar in plot and themes. Both books take a look at a newly built society which is slowly destroyed by the characters or people within them. The concept of one having power over the rest is what corrupts the societies and ends in death and adversity for all others within the society. The authors both use their characters in the novels to portray what society might be like in that type of situation and use their actions to demonstrate how it can fall apart if the correct steps are not taken to maintain a functioning society. Therefore, both authors show how power can corrupt a society and create great har dship for the people ruled through its stimulating characters and their fraught actions. The main characters in both of the books are the ones who ultimately cause the societies to crumble. In Animal Farm George Orwell uses pigs to satire the leadership of Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky and how they manipulated their people into thinking what they are doing is right (NovelGuide). The pigs led a revolution on the farm owner to take the farm and leave it in the hands of all of the animals, instead of man. They stated that the farm would be run by the animals with no rules other then that to never act like a human (Orwell).Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which (Orwell 88). At the start of the revolution, there was no clear ââ¬Ëleaderââ¬â¢ of the anima ls and they did as they pleased, however the much smarter pigs started changing some of the rules that were set forth to make sure none of the animals would behave the way the humans had.The much smarter pigs took advantage of all of the other animals and started changing rules, giving them increasingly more power over the group. In the end, the power hungry pigs ended up becoming exactly what they set out to destroy, humans. The result of this corruption of power ended with a couple animals dying and others working night and day endlessly. In the novel Lord of the Flies author William Golding uses children lost on a deserted island to represent a newly formed society. Two boys choose to take different approaches to surviving on the island and running the rest of the group, so they split up into their own little societies. Jack, one of the leaders chooses a more violent role of surviving; he disagrees with the methods of Ralph (the other leader) and takes command of most of the boys (Golding). Jack began his adventure on the island as a normal boy just like any of the others, however after he was elected into power by all of his friends, it quickly got to his head. ââ¬Å"I agree with Ralph. We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything. So we've got to do the right thingsâ⬠(Golding 42). The power which is corrupting Jack causes him to do many things no person would think of doing while trying to survive (Bookrags). In the end, Jackââ¬â¢s power ended in the deaths of two boys and the utter destruction of an island. All in all, power was what lead the main characters in each of the novels to corrupt a society they had longed to be apart of, leading to deaths of others and the hardship of the rest. Both the pigs and Jack used manipulation and their power to control the others in their respective societies. Within Animal Farm the pigs used their smarts to out wit and manipulate the others into giving them power over the rest. When the revolution first happened, the animals established ââ¬ËThe Seven Commandmentsââ¬â¢ which consisted of rules preventing any animal from acting like a human (Golding). Over time the farm animals grew suspicious of the pigs actions and reverted back to ââ¬ËThe Seven Commandmentsââ¬â¢, which was no use since the pigs were the only ones that could read, and they changed the rules in their favour.ââ¬ËIt says, ââ¬Å"No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheetsâ⬠,ââ¬â¢ she announced finally. Curiously enough, Clover had not remembered that the Fourth Commandment mentioned sheets; but as it was there on the wall, it must have done so (Orwell 42). Over time the pigs became more and more like the humans, and with no questions asked as well since none of the animals understood what the pigs were up too. The pigs used the saying ââ¬Å"Four legs good, two legs badâ⬠to justify most of their actions to the less inte lligent animals (NeoEnglishSystem). The pigs rise to power andthe corruption of the animal farm was aided by the smarts the pigs possessed over the other less clever animals. In Lord of the Flies, main character Jack uses persuasion and other un-ethical tactics to recruit other children into joining his ââ¬Ëgroupââ¬â¢. Some of these tactics include threatening and bribing the others in order for him to gain power over the majority of the kids on the island (Bookrags). Jackââ¬â¢s methods of gaining the majority of the boys on the island results in him having complete power of what goes on, on the island.ââ¬Å"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! â⬠(Golding 168). Jack orders an attack on the so called ââ¬Ëmonsterââ¬â¢ that is living on the island with them. Without second guessing him, his tribe attacks the ââ¬Ëmonsterââ¬â¢ which turns out to be one of the boys. All in all, the corruption of the others in the society by the leaders using manipul ation and other methods to gain power is what leads to the ultimate demolition of the two novels societies.Due to their mad hunt for power and the means they went through to achieve it, the pigs and Jack had a bunch of repercussions for their actions against their respective societies. The pigs used their brains as a way to gain power and control of their group of animals, however by doing this it resulted in the deaths of a couple of the animals as well as the expulsion of one of the other pigs (Orwell). About half the animals on the farm rushed out to the knoll where the windmill stood. There lay Boxer, between the shafts of the cart, his neck stretched out, unable to even raise his head. His eyes were glazed, his sides matted with sweat. A thin stream of blood had trickled out of his mouth (Orwell 74). Even though the pigs are the ones that organized the revolution on the humans, they ended up becoming what they had feared. They over worked the other farm animals and made them thi nk it was all for a better cause (NeoEnglishSystem). Lord of the Fliesââ¬â¢ main character Jack also had major repercussions for his actions. Jack did not put him self in the leadership role, he was chosen by Ralph to help him run the group of boys.Things quickly got out of hand for Jack and he soon wanted to lead all of the boys by himself instead of with Ralph. Jackââ¬â¢s actions to get into power are what corrupted the small society of boys and those actions came with the repercussions of death for two of the boys and the near death experience for another. If anyone peered under the bushes and chanced to glimpse human flesh it might be sameric who would pretend not to see and say nothing. He laid his cheek against the chocolate coloured earth, licked his dry lips and closed his eyes.Under the thicket, the earth was vibrating very slightly; or perhaps there was a sound beneath the obvious thunder of the fire and scribbled ululations that was too low to hear (Golding 220). Ja ck told his tribe that they needed to kill Ralph and the only way to find him was to burn the jungle down. Ralph ran for his life away from the blood thirsty tribe of children and the fire (Cliffnotes). Jackââ¬â¢s actions to gain power have dire repercussions for the two boys who ended up dying and Ralph who was chased and nearly killed if he had not ran into a Naval Officer. All in all, the actions of the main characters who attempted to gain power over the others in the society were what eventually lead to the corruption of both societies. In conclusion, both William Golding and George Orwell do an amazing job of demonstrating how power can corrupt a society by using their characters in their novels. Both of the novels give the reader an insightful look at how society might be if the leaders of our countries grew corrupt with the power that they held over the rest of society.

Violance in Video Games Essay - 922 Words
Violence Most of the time violence is considered as the worst when it comes to the bad effects of video games. Gender, Ethnicity And Socio Economic Status - 1523 Words
Stakeholders The participants from the community were between 16 and 80 years old. The researcher ensured to include a balanced group that covered gender, ethnicity and socio-economic status. Employment status was not a variable used in this study. The researcher used ten jurisdictions nationwide to help ensure coverage of the majority of subcultures within the U.S. population. There were three large police departments, four medium police departments, and three small police departments. The community population corresponded to the size of the department. Each jurisdiction included poor, lower class, middle class and upper class respondents. Other found research studies have only focused on individual jurisdictions and communities or country compared to country (Schuck Rosenbaum, 2005). Those were either too narrow or too broad for the intent of this research project. Research Methods The research involved self-completion questionnaires covering the experiences of police officers and community members within the ten jurisdictions researched. Furthermore, it included rural and urban locations and the target population were those people who had any type of interaction with the police. It was a cost-effective way to obtain a large sample base in a reasonable amount of time. In order to appeal to the entire population, city officials would have to agree to place the questionnaires on the city and police department websites with electronic submission as an option. Essay on Academic Dishonesty A Corruptive Social Norm
Who Cheats Cheaters come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, 75% of all students openly admit to some form of academic dishonesty throughout their educational career (Cheating Fact Sheet). With so many people who openly admit to academic dishonesty, certain categories of students tend to exhibit more cheating behaviors than others. One classification consists of students in a group. Studies have found that cheating is more prevalent in group oriented settings, such as fraternities and sororities (Anderman and Murdock 17). Most dishonest behaviors involve some form of collaboration or communication between learners thus, this correlation is logical. The correlation between cheating behaviors and academic performance based on GPA is alsoâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Students are attempting to justify their dishonest acts, and using many different justifications for such acts. The most common justification for cheating behaviors is a lack of time and worry about potential failure. Other reasons for dishonest behaviors include; high pressure for grades, unfair professor or assigned workload, lack of effort, and lack of fear if caught (Anderman and Murdock 12-13; Keith-Speigel and Whitley 23-24). McCabe offers and insightful opinion as he suggests that students cheat because they will see others cheating, and getting away with it. This gives them an unfair advantage in the race for a high GPA, which will influence other studentââ¬â¢s to cheat in order to level the playing field (Cheating in College). Academics have become a never ending battle for grades. The goals of structuralized education have shifted from engaging studentââ¬â¢s to learn valuable and world altering knowledge, and instead has shifted to producing studentââ¬â¢s with a 4.0 GPA. Performance oriented educational systems only invite dishonest behaviors because the legitimate acquisition of knowledge is undervalued and less important than the letter on a report card. When this undervaluing occurs students see cheating as a necessary means by which they must use to achieve the ill-conceived goal of education which has been seeded into their minds. How Does Cheating

Marketing and Implementation Strategy Samples for Student
Question: Discuss about Marketing and implementation strategy ? Answer: Introducation: In order to set out any viable plan, it is important to note down the activities to be achieved and their time limits. Time frames ensure that a person sticks to the plans and that there is no chance of wasting time in other things (Saajanaho et al., 2016). It is thus the joy of everyone to see that the plans that they set have been successfully achieved at the right time. At the moment, my goals a)re: first to complete my bachelors degree, second is to enroll and complete my Masters degree and third is to start my own Fast Food joint business which will be aimed at my commitment in the creation of job opportunities to other youths. In this case, the three questions which guide my setting and realization of my goals are: what do you intend to achieve? What are the expectations of the society? Do you have what it requires solving a social challenge? My drive to achieve are based on the fact that am an organized individuals who keeps time well, I can handle stressing tasks, am accurate and am effective in a personal way. Apart from making profits, my goal of starting a business is to provide opportunity to many graduates who are stuck jobless in the market. This Fast Food joint business will be a profitable business because most people in UAE have a busy lifestyle and hence they require a convenient place to take their meals. In my current job, I have learned customer satisfaction and record keeping skills. Marketing and implementation strategy The implementation and marketing of these goals will be on the basis of the vast experience that I have had while at my current place of employment (Chang, 2016). Other personal attributes are good customer relations, proper communication, and a focused individual. Having good interpersonal skills, am sure that I will be able to constantly interact with people for help in school work while I will have proper customer relations to advance my business. Risks and mitigation It is important to note that running and maintaining a business is a challenging activity. Some of the challenges that I might face is on recruitment of qualified people to work in my Fast Food joint shop (Newton et al., 2015). In this case, I will base my selection criteria for the right personnel for the new business on the years of past experience. Another challenge is raising capital to venture into this business. In this case, I intend to borrow money from family and relatives on repayable terms. Having started the business, I will have my wife as the director to oversee the business operations while I will be going through the sales books on a daily basis. Ethics While in my current job and once I start my own business, honesty to the clients, colleagues and my employer will be key to my success (Hartman et al., 2014). Since I was young, I have been honest with my parents and myself; same case to my employer. I borrow my motivation from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, a renowned entrepreneur that "Every morning you have two options: sleep to complete your dreams or wake up to achieve your dreams". On the basis of the six-word memoir, my memoir is: success is achieved through hard work and honesty. I therefore wish to work very hard in fulfilling my goals to ensure that within the next five years, I will be a different person, at a better position than I am today. I am sure that by completing my first degree and a Masters degree, coupled with starting my own business, I will have fulfilled my heart desires as well as change the lives of other people in the society through job creation and offering of quality services. The Apprenticeship Of Duddy Kravitz--The Tragic Fall Of Duddy Essays
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz--The Tragic Fall of Duddy The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz--The Tragic Fall of Duddy A man must pursue his dreams. This is certainly true for everyone of the humankind, for if there were no dreams, there would be no reason to live. Duddy Kravitz understands this perfectly, that is why he is one of the most ambitious young men of his time. From the moment he hears his grandfather says, "A man without land is nobody," he is prepared to seek the land of his dream -- no matter what the cost would be. This ambition of his is very respectable, but unfortunately his methods are damnable. Duddy is a relentless pursuer; a formidable competitor and also a ruthless manipulator. It is true that he has obtained all the land that he desires at the end, but he succeeds through immoral, despicable and contemptible means. It is clear then, that Duddy has failed in his apprenticeship and has become the "scheming little bastard" that Uncle Benjy has warned him against. There is no doubt that Duddy is very shrewd and clever, but his lack of moral principles attributes to his final failure. In fact, his immorality can be traced back to a very young age. During his study in the parochial school, he already earns money through methods that hardly comply to virtues of any kind. Taking advantage of the fact that minors cannot be sued in Canada, Duddy defrauds stamp companies and sells stolen hockey sticks. Perhaps he cannot distinguish right from wrong; perhaps he does not care, but nonetheless it is not proper for him to engage himself into these kinds of activities. Duddy emerges himself deeper into the sea of corruption when he establishes Dudley Kane Enterprises. With his limited knowledge of movie making and his mistaken trust in John Friar, his firm produces bar-mitzvah films of extremely poor quality. The bar-mitzvah film for Mr. Cohen, for example, is obviously a failing product. "Duddy didn't say a word all through the screening but afterwards he was sick to his stomach." After the scre ening, Duddy says to Mr. Friar, "I could sell Mr. Cohen a dead horse easier than this pile of --." However, realizing the obvious faultiness of the film, Duddy does not talk candidly to his client. Instead, he untruthfully says that the film is a phenomenal piece of art and that he is entering it into the Cannes Festival. By doing so, he deceives the Cohen family into buying the defective bar-mitzvah film of Bernie. As a matter of fact, Kravitz is not only skillful in handling situations, but he is also very apt in manipulating people. This can be clearly seen in his relationships with Virgil and Yvette. Duddy is never loved in his family, so originally Duddy is quite content to know that there is someone who cares about him -- Yvette. He finds great comradeship in her and has also enjoyed great sex with her. But as time passes by, Yvette becomes only a tool to him. He uses her as a medium through which he can buy the land that he lusts for; because he is a minor and he can not legally own land. "The farmers would be wary of a young Jew, they might jack up prices or even refuse to sell, but another French-Canadian would not be suspect." Duddy also treats her as a sexual toy. He makes love with Yvette whenever he wants it, but he does not take Yvette's feelings into consideration: "Yvette wanted to wait, but Duddy insisted, and they made love on the carpet." He never pays any respect to Yvette and he does "...not know how to treat a woman." With Virgil, Duddy takes advantage of his physical disabilities. After selling the pinball machines that Virgil brought him to ease his financial troubles, Duddy does not want to repay Virgil. Using the fact that Virgil is an epileptic and that it is very difficult for him to be hired, Duddy employs him as a driver. But Duddy tells him that a truck would be necessary for the task, and that he can provide Virgil with the perfect vehicle for one thousand dollars
